Mixed Use Development, Small-scaled Housing
Sited in Belleville, Paris,  this scheme responds to the artistic neighborhood, where the primary protagonists are young artists. The main challenge for this site was the 8m level difference between the two streets that surrounds the site, but this also made the site the most interesting among the three that we were visiting. Therefore, I have split the programmes into two buildings to ensure privacy and clear wayfinding. Housing is provided on the Eastern Block, with apartments upstairs and a two-storey workshop beneath. This allows the artist to live and work conveniently, and the workshop doubles as a shopfront on the upper street level and an open studio for the threshold between the blocks. The Western Block is a public exhibition space with a roof park, allowing the young artists to garner public attention, and a place for the community to gather.
